Wendy deCoste

Wendy deCoste was born just outside of Montreal, Quebec and spent most of her childhood there. She moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1982, and now lives in Wellington with her husband, two sons and her cats. Wendy graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 1986 from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, where her main areas of study were photography and printmaking. Both processes have influenced her current work. She uses her own photos as reference, usually using several to form the composition. Working from photos is necessary for the amount of time required to achieve the level of detail in the drawings. All the prints seen at this site are reproductions from original drawings. Each one is signed and numbered. They are printed on acid-free heavyweight stock.

For her originals, her medium of choice is pencil (and a good sharpener), which gives her the control to carefully portray the smallest details and allows her to sensitively model her subjects with light and shadow. Textures are what inspire her. Working with pencil, without the support of colour, is her chosen method to represent the true nature of her subjects. Although nothing can compare to seeing these drawings in person, hopefully the images on this site will give you a good idea about the depth of detail in her work.

Wendy also works as a graphic designer/illustrator for Tall Ships Art Productions in Waverley, Nova Scotia. Her work through Tall Ships can be seen in gift shops all across Canada. She is available on a limited basis for commissioned work as well. Please contact her for pricing on commissions.
